The Story

A spectacular antique chain necklace filled with colorful gemstones. Done during the Victorian era, circa mid to late 1800s, this rare necklace is a spectacular find. Set with 121 semi-precious stones, the Harlequin style is show-stopping. A colorful mixture of bezel set topaz, tourmalines, garnets, citrines, and amethysts create a stunning effect. All set in 9 karat gold, the colors sing.

Graduating in size, the largest stones are found at the middle of the chain. Hanging from the center is a 2 inch lariat ending in a colorless cushion cut stone. If you would like to have the lariat removed get in touch and we can accommodate.

Harlequin costume as we know it today originated in the 1600s from the commedia dell'arte. In jewelry history it represents colorful stone pieces, "a riot of hues", which this piece exemplifies.

At 56 inches long it can be worn a multitude of ways. It can be wrapped up to 4 times around the neck and 8 times around the wrist.

By-the-yard chains have been around since the Victorian era and are still made today. It's an evergreen style that is seen done time after time, but a fully enact Victorian example like this is incredibly rare. Most have been taken apart over time and repurposed. It's a truly spectacular piece not often seen.
