victorian 18k gold and ruby snake ring
The Story
Snakes have a long and rich history in jewelry dating back to Ancient Greece and Rome, where snakes symbolized wisdom. The Victorians often used snakes to symbolize everlasting love, with a coiled snake in particular representing eternity.
This snake ring is a beautiful example. Made late in the Victorian era, circa 1880s-1900, from rich 18 karat yellow gold. A looped snake sits at center. The body is textured throughout and ends with a smooth face complete with eyes and mouth. At the center of the head is an antique cut ruby measuring approximately 2.5 mm round. Made later is an 18k yellow gold ring open at center. It seems the ring was made for the snake and the two were married long ago.
A gorgeous snake ring, it's unusual in design. Most snake rings coil around the finger while this one shows its whole body at front. A special and unique ring that's filled with symbolism, it's sure to be your new favorite heirloom.
