victorian toi et moi emerald and diamond ring
The Story
A bright and colorful "Toi et Moi" ring made during the late Victorian era. Meeting at center are two main stones, one old cut emerald and one Old Mine Cut diamond. The emerald is set within yellow gold prongs while the 0.58 carat diamond is set in platinum. Curving platinum-topped 18 karat gold sections move out from the center with five smaller Old Mine Cut diamonds set within. The bi-color metal along with the stone combination makes for a striking piece.
A French saying, “Toi et Moi” means You and Me and in jewelry refers to a ring that showcases two stones symbolizing two people. These were common engagement rings during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, symbolizing two souls that are intertwined. The ring that is believed to have started the trend was a diamond and sapphire engagement ring given by Napoleon to Josephine in 1776.
